How can the weight of snow or snow load be calculated?
Snow load is given in kg per square metre and depends strongly on snow type (powder snow, wet snow, ice) and water content. Rule of thumb: 10 cm of fresh snow = ~10 kg/m², 10 cm of compacted snow = up to 40 kg/m². Our monitoring measures the true load directly on the roof - without guesswork.

When is a roof at risk from snow load?
As soon as the permissible snow load according to DIN EN 1991-1-3 / DIN EN 1991-1-7 is exceeded. These values vary by region (snow-load zones 1-3) and depend on roof shape, structural design and construction type. snowcontrol triggers an alarm before the permissible load is reached.

What is standing water and why is it dangerous?
Standing water occurs when rain or melt water does not drain quickly - for example through blocked drains, ice dams or insufficient roof pitch. 1 cm of standing water corresponds to ~10 kg/m². Standing water is one of the most common causes of roof collapses outside the winter season.

How is snowcontrol installed?
The sensors are mounted at representative positions on the roof (short screw fixing, no roof-membrane penetration required). Data is transmitted wirelessly to the evaluation unit inside the building. Commissioning takes half a working day to a full working day depending on roof size - by certified partners.

What does the alarm look like?
Once a threshold is reached, snowcontrol alerts via four channels: visually on the display, acoustically inside the building, by SMS and by email. In addition, there is an optional live dashboard for multiple sites and voice alerting through the data portal.

Which buildings benefit most?
Large-area flat roofs and lightweight roof structures: logistics halls, production buildings, sports halls, riding arenas, agricultural halls, photovoltaic roofs and buildings in snow-load zones 2 and 3. With critical roof geometries (internal sumps, skylights) the sensor count is increased accordingly.

What happens during a power outage?
The evaluation unit has an integrated UPS with several hours of backup runtime. Sensor batteries last 5 to 10 years depending on model. If a component fails completely, the system reports a device fault to the stored contacts - no silent failures.

Is snowcontrol relevant for insurers and expert reports?
Yes. Several property insurers accept snowcontrol as a risk-mitigation measure and grant premium reductions. The measurement logs are accepted as a documentary basis for expert reports. Get in touch for your specific insurance policy.
